The Anaheim Ducks announced that they have signed free agent defenseman Matt Smaby to a one-year, two-way contract. In 32 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning last year, Smaby was scoreless with a +2 rating and 17 PIMs.
The deal is reportedly worth $600,000 in the NHL and $105,000 in the AHL.
Smaby, who has never played more than 43 games in a single season, has played in parts of four seasons with the Lightning. In that span, he has recorded 0 goals, 6 assists, and 106 PIMs over 122 games. He has also spent four years in the AHL, scoring 5-25=30 points and 148 PIMs in 156 games.
Standing at a towering 6’6″ and weighing 239 pounds, Smaby brings an intimidating presence to the Ducks’ blue line. He will likely be fighting for a final spot in the Anaheim lineup. If he cannot stick with the big club, he will provide veteran experience to the Syracuse roster.
