The Anaheim Ducks have traded defenseman Mark Mitera to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for RFA defenseman Mathieu Carle.

Mitera was Anaheim’s first-round draft pick (19th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.  Carle was selected by Montreal in the second round (53rd overall) in the same year.

Carle has played 4 games in the NHL over two seasons, going scoreless with a +1 rating.  In 222 games in the AHL with the Hamilton Bulldogs, he has scored 30 goals and 67 assists for 97 points, a +27 rating, and 156 PIMs.  The defenseman was appointed to the 2011 AHL Western Conference All-Star Team.

Carle is a restricted free agent and must be signed by the Ducks, who now exclusively hold his rights.

Mitera, the Ducks’ first pick in the 2006 draft, has been unable to crack the NHL lineup.  At 6’3″ and 210 pounds, he promised good size to the Ducks’ lineup.  However, his numbers have not been very impressive at the lower levels.  In 108 games in the AHL, Mitera has recorded 6-21=27 points over four seasons.  He ended last season with a -15 rating and is a career -9.
